Good if you do simple things September 8, 2010 Dick Hardt Havin g had a Chumby when they were first handed out at foo camp, I was excited to see the "commercialization". The Sony hardware is great -- but the device is overly complicated to do simple things. Creating an account on the website so that I could add other gadgets failed with an error message about a non-existent account parameter. Eventually I created my account, but have no idea what I was doing wrong.
If you are the type of person who likes to run Linux or Android -- this is a fun little toy that may either entertain you for a couple days or you install a few things and it ends up being an expensive clock.
I want to love it September 2, 2010 B. Ben Boy do I want to love the Sony Dash. And I may once it matures a bit and the "apps," operating system (Linux), and Sony's clunky website catch up to the machine's potential. I needed a new alarm clock and thought, what the hey, I'll spend a lot for cool. The biggest problem as I see it are the apps. They are sub par and that's being nice. Sony needs to produce their own apps, and here's a clue, program them to fit the Dash's larger screen. I'm even willing to pay .99 for a decent app. Sony, please take a look at Apple's website for how apps should be produced and made available. If you don't figure this out, the Dash will be another Sony machine with tons of potential that simply never measures up. The Dash (500MHz processor, 7in screen) hit the market spec'd out way behind the Insignia Infocast (800MHz processor, 8in screen) BUT bigger is not always better if you plan to sit the machine on a night stand, and Insignia's product quality is not the best. The Dash has a very durable and attractive rubber housing that should hold up well over time. The Dash's inner speakers sound better than some reviews would lead you to believe. Here's an app idea...Sony should take their nature sounds from their latest alarm clock radio and put them into an app. If you go to the Chumby/Sony website, which is where you'll end up to pick and choose your apps, there is a "sleep sound generator" but it sounds horrible. Last comment, I gave the Dash three stars simply because it's cool and I really, really hope that Sony assigns at least two part-time engineers to improve its operating system, app choices, and clunky website interface. One part-time engineer would probably be enough :)
dont buy August 29, 2010 maddmatt item seemed cool but malfunctioned. it locks up regularly. dont trust it to wake you up. seller is great. fast shipping. great service.
unfortunately inferior product. not reccomended
Mostly good August 23, 2010 DN (Worcester, MA USA) The Dash does have a very narrow market it will appeal to. And when you compare its feature set with other similar consumer electronics (smartphones, netbooks, tablets), it's a little price -- it needs to be closer to $100 to sell in volume.
The big functional drawback is: No battery backup for the alarm clock (!). Sort of defeats the purpose of having an uber-alarm clock.
The touch screen is resistive, not capacitive, so it requires a hard press, but that's not that big a deal.
Setup was easy, and there's a nice range of chumby-supplied apps.
Loving my Dash! August 10, 2010 rob damiani 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had owned 3 Chumby's prior to upgrading to the Sony Dash; better screen - MUCH better screen, better WiFi connectivity, (Solid connection with the Dash where one of my old Chumby's would constantly drop Wifi). The Dash is better looking than the Chumby as well.
