Mixed feelings.... February 26, 2010 YeahSoMaybe? (Beaverton, OR United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Sony ZS-H10CP Heavy-Duty CD Radio Boombox
I just received this from Amazon. It's fairly huge. (As I recall from the dimension specs, the CDFG 700 model is even larger front-to-back[depth-wise])
This thing is about 20% bigger than I envisioned it - even with looking at the dimension specs before purchase. I was going to put it out on our deck for parties but visually..the thing just "takes over". I think I'll just feed a regular discman into our patio system for now.
What I'll end up using this for is working in the garage, yard work, etc or maybe going car camping.
PRO'S:
- It's built like a tank and has an attempt at water "resistance" (gaskets over input ports, large beveled top cover flap for CD player.
- Probably one of the last of the rugged players that still has a CD player in it.
- It will play CD-RWs and MP3s. Yay.
- Volume, yeah it can blast. It produces..as far as amplifier VOLUME output goes.
- The Handle: You can't miss it. It will probably protect the unit if lighter things fall on it and...you could conceivably bike chain the handle to something for short periods of time as a theft deterrent.
- It has a 3.5mm stereo input for the MP3 player or whatever of your choice. I have a non-iPod (Cowon Jet Audio i5 60GB) that I can patch into the external audio input 3.5 mm jack. It frankly sounds way better than an iPOD, too bad my model is discontinued.
Visually - you uh can't miss it. You wont leave it behind somewhere by mistake.
CONS:
- It seems to take longer than I'm used to for the CD player to spin up and index and play the first track. Neither of my car decks take this long, neither do either of my 3 Panasonic CD transports (discman type, home theater and older DVD/CD player) nor my Sharp home CD player.
- Sonically it's not "sumptuous", or warm or whatever that indescribable "audio comfort food" satisfaction level is. It's loudly "OK". "Enough" "Adequate". And this is with my 2009 remastered Beatles CDs. I'm thinking for this size of unit it ought to be awesome but the price is OK.
- The radio tuning seems to be "so so". Like a lot of things on this boombox "yeah it works..but..." it leaves you wanting a bit more.
- The power cord is klunky has the transformer box in the middle thing. Sigh.
- Visually - there's nothing subtle about it. It's a Godzilla techno galute construction site kind of asthetic (with the Klingon hexagonal side thing going on too...)
- The volume level indicator display mode is a bit funny, it will go 1, 1-, 2, 2-, 3, 3-, etc instead of the 2nd field counting up. You'd THINK the actual LCD is broken but in no other mode does it act like this (time or radio frequency display, etc). Yeah it works, it's just disconcerting - you think it's broken.

Manufactures (especially Harman Kardon) are you listening?
Make and market a rugged HD Radio boombox WITH A CD player!! that works correctly and sounds decent for say $280 bucks and I'll buy it. No, the Denon S-52 was NOT it and Cambridge does not make a model EXACTLY filling this bill.
But I guess a CD Player HD Radio boombox is too klunky and "old skool" for manufactures to consider making..sigh. Too many marketing surveys causing feature timidity.
P.S. I * LOVE * my Sony XDR1 and Sony XDR-S3HD radios. I'm fortunate to live in an area with strong HD radio signals.
Side rant re the iPOD: I'm sorry that little runt rules the roost. Not all of us want or are in love with the iPOD. i.e. not all of us want a built-in iPOD (Apple brand device) dock. I do like that fact that this unit doesn't have one. What I would like to see if a little sunken rectangle moulded into the top of boomboxes with a place to slide thru a little velcro strap for us iPod "Unbelievers" who have not been assimlated by The Apple iPod Borg. : )
cannot take hits while playing cds... February 19, 2010 J. Sweaney (Kerrville Tx) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
i ordered this boombox yesterday afternoon and it arrived this morning. which is awesome. i was surprised at how simple the controls are, theres no guessing on what button does what. i have not been able to test it with batteries cause i dont have any at the moment. but this is a beast of a boombox, and since it was so big i was expecting huge bass which is what i wanted, (along with the ruggedness and water resistance for at the lake or course) dont get me wrong the bass is excellent and clear its not booming which is kind of what i like there is one thing that bothers me. the holes in the bottom that let air out for the bass concern me cause sand or water could get in there by accident since there right there at the bottom. but i think thats a minor problem cause il most likely keep it in the bed of my truck instead of on the ground. the external adapter is kind of weird since they could have easily fit it inside owell cant always get what we want. and the volume control feel alittle flimsy. not it-could-break-any-second kinda flimsy but more of a you can move it around kinda flimsy. mabe thats just how its made in case something falls on it it wont break it instead it will kinda bounce off the knob. yea i think thats why its like that. \\so overall great sound very loud, very durable and "in your face' red and black color and simple controls.// tho if you have a cd playing and you hit it. not hard, it will skip, luckily it doesnt scratch the cd
radio review February 14, 2010 Hugh R. Simpson (Ft Worth, Tx) It's big but that's great. Sound is great also, easy to use and my wife loves it. Thanks Hugh
Nice February 3, 2010 Holly Golightly (United States) Was a little shocked to find that this was so large. Nice features though. Wish it had a remote. But happy, over all, with purchase.
Large and simple January 3, 2010 R. Prill (Raleigh, NC) This box works well, with very simple controls. MP3 CDs play easily without any hassle. There's nothing complicated about it which makes it very easy to operate. How much complication do you really need for a box that is designed for the worksite?
The box is very large. This is not a problem, but something to be aware of if you are to buy it.
Likes: plays MP3 CDs effortlessly, good on batteries, easy controls, pretty good sound
Improvement required: radio reception is adequate, but could be better. Display delay when changing presets. Cumbersome DC converter cord.
Some earlier reviews really complained about the radio reception. I found the reception to be OK, but not terrible. It could be better, but it isn't a deal breaker. One slightly annoying thing is when using the presets, it shows "FM-01", "FM-02", etc for a few seconds before showing the frequency. I would prefer it just show the frequency and maybe the preset if you hit the display button. It isn't the most friendly display option. However, MP3s show good title information.
Finally, it runs great on batteries. The included cord has an AC/DC converter box. This is probably part of the weather wise design, as the AC parts are sealed, so shock hazard is very low. That's good, but what is bad is the cord is now cumbersome.
